Urology Times Covers Controversial IC and Abuse Issue
The April 1, 2009 edition of Urology Times tackles the controversial topic of abuse and its possible connection to interstitial cystitis.  Penny Allen's article "Abuse & Interstitial Cystitis: Is There a Connection Worth Examining?" traces the origins of the recent emergence of the IC and abuse theory and then follows the scientific trail, citing studies that indicate no connection, a slight connection, and a fairly high rate of incidence of sexual, physical, and childhood sexual abuse among those with IC.

Finding a definitive answer to the abuse question may lie in using longitudinal studies which would follow a large group IC patients and controls over several years.  However, as several researchers and clinicians pointed out in the article, since there has been only modest data supporting the abuse theory, are clinicians and researchers losing sight of their main goal -- providing real help to those with IC -- by focusing on this issue?  Dr. Raymond Rackey, professor of surgery at Cleveland Clinic's Center for Pelvic Health and Reconstructive Surgery, who was interviewed for the Urology Times article, comments that "misrepresenting sexual abuse as the cause for IC is ridiculously and dangerously placing the blame on non-pathological issues that are a distraction to seeking the real cure of this urothelial condition."
