Interstitial Cystitis Association Appoints Dr. Holly Atkinson to Board of Directors
Association Taps Physician and Award-Winning Journalist to Help Educate the Medical Community and Public about Debilitating Disease

WASHINGTON, DC [February 26, 2009] - Health and communications expert, Dr. Holly Atkinson, has been named to the board of directors of the Interstitial Cystitis Association (ICA). Currently serving as the chief of medical affairs for HealthiNation and co-director of the Advancing Idealism in Medicine Program at Mount Sinai School of Medicine, Atkinson brings more than 25 years of communications, nonprofit and medical experience to the ICA.

As a member of the board of directors, Atkinson will support the ICA advocacy efforts for more effective treatments and, eventually, a cure for interstitial cystitis, a severely painful and chronic bladder condition affecting more than 1.3 million in the United States. Providing communications counsel and support, Atkinson will help promote research, funding and patient support for IC through educational initiatives directed toward the medical community, patients and the general public.

"Dr. Atkinson has devoted her life to the well being of the American public and we could not be more pleased to welcome her as a member of the leadership team," said Barbara Gordon, president of the ICA. "Her seasoned expertise on issues related to preventive medicine, women's health and the role of the media will help us advance our goal to raise awareness about IC and improve the lives of patients suffering from this disease."

A magna cum laude graduate of Colgate University, Atkinson received her medical degree from the University of Rochester and a master's degree in journalism from Columbia. Prior to serving as senior on-air correspondent and chief of medical affairs for HealthiNation, Atkinson was a founder and chief executive officer of Reuters Health and immediate past president of Physicians for Human Rights. She currently is also assistant clinical professor in the Department of Medicine at Mount Sinai School of Medicine.

"I am excited to join the ICA's dedicated team of devoted and talented professionals," said Dr. Atkinson. "By spreading knowledge and understanding of this disease in the medical community and among patients themselves, I truly believe we can drastically improve lives and ultimately find a cure for IC."
